Golf news
The Captains’ Drive Out takes place at Tuam Golf Club on this coming Sunday, November 10. It will be a shotgun start at 2pm.
It will be followed by refreshments and a presentation of prizes in the clubhouse at 5pm. Well done to Dermot Fahy and Margaret Griffiths who took on the role of Captains.
They are time-consuming roles but they have served the club proud and the members appreciate their involvement.
They were assisted in no small way by President Maria Coen who made herself available for as many presentations as was physically possible.
The Tuam Golf Club golfer of the year is the ever popular Mike Fannon. He was consistent throughout the year and his handicap fell from 21 to 16 during that period.
The always-consistent Ronan Stephens came in with a late run to finish second with Eugene Melvin finishing in third place.
Schools Golf
The Archbishop McHale golf tournament took place last week, featuring an exciting team-based scramble format that brought together students, teachers and a special Tuam Golf Club member as in local golf legend and long-time club member, Mr. Rae Gilmore, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday.
With a Status Yellow Rain warning the day before, the heavens were already well emptied and luckily Friday morning was a beautiful autumn day, fresh and dry and perfect conditions for golf.
Each team consisted of four players: a teacher and three students. With a Texas Scramble format; this allowed those new to the game an easier entry into competitive golf.
Many students played their first game of golf which was very pleasing to see. Special thanks to Mr McManus, Ms Ryan, Mr Brady and Rae Gilmore for helping the students each week practising different golf shots and getting them involved in golf.
The tournament was closely contested, with scores remaining tight throughout the day and only two strokes separating the top four teams.
Pre-tournament favourites Ms Ryan, Tuam GC members, Joe O’Grady and Shay Togher and Spanish student Valeria Lara had to settle for third place.
Mr Brady along with first years Dan Keane, Lisimba Mate and Daithi Coen were within a whisker of first place but were one shot short.
Ultimately, the team who took home the trophy was Rae Gilmore along with third year students Eric Ryan and Noel Ferencsik and first year Luke O’Grady playing in his first golf tournament.
All team members contributed to a fantastic team score and several big putts were sunk to secure the win.
The day concluded with a brief awards ceremony in the clubhouse, where the winning team received their prizes.
More events have been planned for later in the year. Golf at AMC is growing with a large number of students taking up the game for the first time. This is very encouraging and based on this competition, the future is bright.
